The Life and Ballets of Lev Ivanov: Choreographer of the Nutcracker and Swan Lake
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (March, 1997)
Average review score:

Outstanding scholarship reveals life of unknown balletmasterLev Ivanov has been, for the last century, a known name but an unknown figure. As fruit of exceptional research into Russian archives, Professor Wiley has produced what he claims is a `first study'--which undoubtedly it is, but which future generations of dance lovers and scholars will recognize as a major work of historical and interpretative research. Ivanov must ever remain a shadowy figure. Contemporary comment and contemporary records reveal as little as one might expect about a man was only `second balletmaster'. His legacy to us, of course, is enshrined in two of the most popular ballet in the world--`Swan Lake' and `The Nutcracker'. Yet it is Professor Wiley who has now made clear the extent of Ivanov's contribution to the development and the greatness of the Russian imperial ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre. The book is essential reading for anyone concerned with ballet, and it is a work of both scholarship and artistic insights. --Clement Crisp, Ballet Critic, The Financial Times of London

A wonderful read for anyone and a must for history buffs!Ms. Roosevelts highly informative and readable text combines with the volumes many photographs and illustrations to bring to life the world of the aristocracy and landed gentry of Russia and those who served them, more than a century ago.

A cultural introduction! This book is a cultural introduction into the people, culture, and history of Lietuva (Lithuania). Any title under Cultures of the World Series is usually very good and this title for Lithuania is reasonably good. The Little Humpbacked Horse : A Russian Tale
Published in School & Library Binding by Clarion Books (March, 1997)
Average review score:

great story for childrenThis is a very nice story about a guy who was a victim of envy first of his brothers, and then other people at emperor's court but in the end he manages to get the beautiful princess for himself with the help of a little hump-backed horse. This was my favourite fairy-tale when I was little, and recently I read it again to my baby brother, and he loved it also.

The Lost Fortune of the Tsars
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (November, 1996)
Average review score:

A fascinating story of vanished wealth and historySo much of the fascination the Russian Tsars still hold for us today is connected with their great wealth and fabulous possessions. William Clarke's book is a detailed examination of the sources of the property of the House of Romanov before World War I and of its disposition and possible whereabouts today. In the process of his search Clarke also proved and disproved several theories as to the fate of the wealth, clearing some notable persons of some unsavory accusations

Luba and the Wren (Picture Books)
Published in School & Library Binding by Philomel Books (May, 1999)
Average review score:

A wonderful version of a classic talePolacco's book is a time honored theme, this retelling from the Ukraine. When Luba saves the Wren's life her parents insist she return to ask for a favor. The parents never seem to be satisfied and send Luba back time and time again. In the end the parents are returned to the happy couple they were when they started. This book can be successfully compared with any of the many available versions of the Fisherman and His Wife but also contains elements from The Stonecutter -- another tale available in several versions. Sometimes those with seemingly little power/wealth think other situations would make them a different person or happier. And when they do obtain power their humility is lost. Satisfaction seldom comes when one has not earned that power or wealth. Polacco's wonderously beautiful watercolors brings this theme into the full vision of readers. A delightfully new twist on a classic tale.

One of the best books I've read about this period in Russia.
This book would also be good for people interested in Women's history.
